Abstract

In recent years, curriculum reforms and standards around the world are putting more emphasis on the construction of scientific explanations. This study is a preliminary research aiming at exploring the skills of pre-service physics teachers in writing scientific explanation on Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) concept. The research used descriptive survey method. The data were obtained through a questionnaire. This question calling for a microscopic level of explanation, there is an explanation involving magnetic force between two current carrying conductors. The study population is students of physics education study program at a college in Bandung with number of sample as many as 36 student. Studies analyzing explanations that have been constructed by pre-service physics teachers students have found that they have difficulty expressing explanation in presence of magnetic field. The findings highlight the importance of developing the skillful use of schemes of scientific explanation by students
