Abstract

The depth thinking of atoms position in space and its relations to molecule stabilization is very important for student teacher. But in stereochemistry lecture, in general the molecule is represented as static picture, accompanied by data resourced from textbook. In explaining of stabilization conformation structure, it has not supported by data which resourced from result of student invention experience through practicum. This study aim to explain the result of practicum activity in determining conformers energy by using 3D molecular visualization software and computational chemistry software, both are based on open source. The subject of study are 30 students of LPTK in Lampung. The instrument of practicum assessment are in the form of practicum result, pretest and posttest, and questionnaire of students response toward practicum. The result of study show that practicum which is consist of 2 @ 120 minutes, is effective to train student to build 3D molecular structure skilfully, to format file input in order to obtain molecule energy data, and to visualize data output. Data of molecule energy help student to predict conformers stabilization skilfully.
